Guided Walking Tour of Castletown with Chris Callow of Island Heritage Tours
The settlement of Castletown grew around the fortress of Castle Rushen, seat of the Kings and Lords of Mann from the 13th century. Boasting some fine Georgian houses, the town has retained much of its character following the relocation of the administration of the Island to Douglas in the 19th century.
On this circular guided walk lasting about an hour, we will view some of the most significant buildings in the town, from ancient chapels and schools to a mortuary, pleasure-house and a brewery.
Colourful characters along the way will include a much-loved Lieutenant-Governor, a naval hero from the Napoleonic wars, an 18th century merchant, banker and inventor, a modern-day White Witch and an Arnhem combatant decorated with the Victoria Cross.
We will also touch on the darker side of the ancient capital with tales of barbaric punishments and executions in bygone times.
The tour will take place on Wednesday evenings throughout August starting at 6:00pm. The cost is £10 per person and each tour is limited to 12 participants. Prior booking is essential using this link Book a Guided Walk.
The meeting place for the walk is the Island Escapes Office, 5 Parliament Street, Castletown IM9 1LA. For more information, please contact Chris 0n 07624 435528
