Are you an Autumn? If you visit the Isle of Man in late October, you may spot carved turnips glowing on doorsteps and hear a haunting tune drifting through village streets. This is Hop-tu-Naa, the island's very own version of Halloween, and it's a celebration unlike anywhere else in the world.
Rich in Celtic tradition and Manx folklore, Hop-tu-Naa is more than just spooky fun. It's one of the oldest continuous customs on the island and offers a fascinating window into its cultural roots. Here's everything you need to know about the occasion and how best to experience the magic during your stay…
What Is Hop-tu-Naa?
Dating back centuries, Hop-tu-Naa marks the ancient Celtic New Year, a time when the veil between worlds was believed to be thinnest. Before pumpkins, children on the Isle of Man would carve turnips, sing traditional songs, and go door to door - a much older practice than the trick-or-treat custom we know today.
The name Hop-tu-Naa comes from the song traditionally sung during these door-to-door visits. The lyrics differ slightly by region, passed down through generations. The Isle of Man is the only place to celebrate the Celtic festival of Hop-tu-Naa which takes place on the 31st of October, but events often happen in the run-up to Halloween.
