Island Escapes proudly supported the official launch of ‘Blein ny Gaelgey’, The Year of the Manx Language 2026!

This year-long celebration, hosted by Jeebin - the Manx Language Network, brings together concerts, events, workshops, educational projects, and cultural experiences across the Isle of Man and beyond. Whether you're a curious beginner or a confident speaker, there's something for everyone.
Chrissy Callaghan, Chair of Jeebin, said, “Our aim is to ensure that everyone, wherever they’re from, whatever their knowledge of Manx is, knows that this language belongs to us all. Blein ny Gaelgey will celebrate and shine a light on what’s already happening, bring Manx to new audiences and create a lasting legacy.”
The launch event was a beautiful tribute to our heritage, from ancient ways of communication to the music and dances that still move us today. We were honoured to be part of this unforgettable evening, celebrating the richness of Manx culture and language.

Everyone who attended was graced with the presence of groups Skeealyn Vannin and Scran, sharing their passion and bringing our roots to life. Skeealyn Vannin is a dynamic performance group from the Isle of Man who celebrates the island’s rich cultural heritage through drama, folk song, and storytelling delivered in both English and Manx Gaelic. The name ‘Skeealyn Vannin’ translates to ‘Stories of Mann’, and that’s exactly what they aim to share: the voices, traditions, and tales of the Isle of Man.

Scran is a vibrant youth music group from the Isle of Man, loved for their energetic reinterpretation of traditional Manx music. The band is made up of talented young musicians aged between 12 and 18, many of whom began their musical journey through Culture Vannin’s Bree project, which nurtures traditional music education on the island. The name Scran means “common people” in Manx, reflecting the group’s grassroots spirit and community focus.
During the launch, the Chief Minister endorsed the campaign, recognising the Manx language as a powerful expression of the Island’s identity. Hon. Alfred Cannan MHK said, “The Year of the Manx Language in 2026 represents an opportunity for us all to reconnect with the roots of our national identity. In an increasingly globalised world, it is more important than ever that we champion what makes our Island unique. This initiative will not only celebrate our heritage but also inspire future generations to engage with the language and culture that define us. I encourage everyone to participate, to learn, and to support this important year. Gura mie eu.”

This is just the beginning of a journey to make Manx a living language once again. Stay tuned for upcoming events and experiences from Culture Vannin as we continue to celebrate the Year of the Manx Language.
John Keggin, Commercial Director of Island Escapes, commented, “Island Escapes was founded in the Isle of Man, and as a socially responsible company we are committed to the community we live and work in. The Manx language is one of the many things that makes our Island unique and of interest. We’re excited to be getting behind the Year of Manx and sharing this with the many visitors we expect to welcome to our shores next year.”
