Heysham to Douglas

Ferry: Manxman

Terminal address: Steam Packet Company Passenger Terminal, South Quay, Heysham, Lancashire LA3 2XE

Operating season: Year-round

Crossing time: 4 hours

Check-in: 11:30 for the 13:45 sailing; 22:30 for the 01:45 sailing

If you’re travelling to and from the Isle of Man by car, motorbike, or campervan, Heysham offers twice-daily sailings throughout the year (with exceptions for scheduled maintenance and Christmas Day). With up to 12 sailings per week, it’s ideal for those travelling from northwest England and beyond.

Following its predecessor, the TSS Manxman, built in 1955, the new, 436-feet-long MV Manxman was built in 2023 and promises an enjoyable crossing with everything you need onboard to keep you comfortable and entertained. With capacity for 948 passengers, its quiet corners and social spaces ensure something for everyone. There are even bookable cabins, should you wish for some downtime whilst aboard.

Explore the ferry’s shops, cafés, and bars, or find a quiet spot in a windowside seat and settle into the journey as a blue horizon drifts past outside. Making this crossing particularly family-friendly are play areas for children, whilst designated pet lounges, private pet cabins, kennels, and an enclosed walking area ensure comfort and space for your canine travel companions.

The Manxman operates throughout the year from Heysham. For foot passengers, Heysham Harbour train station is only a short walk from the main passenger terminal, as is a bus stop on Combermere Road. For motorists, the terminal is just a stone’s throw from Junction 34 on the M6. A passenger lounge is available at the terminal, complete with a seating area and refreshments.

Liverpool to Douglas

Liverpool Ferry Terminal

Ferry: Manannan

Terminal address: Isle of Man Ferry Terminal, 1 Triskelion Way, Liverpool L3 1QW

Operating season: Daily from April to October, and weekends in winter

Crossing time: 2 hours 45 minutes

Check-in: 08:45 for the 11:15 sailing; 16:45 for the 19:15 sailing

The smaller and faster sister ship to the Manxman, the Manannan is a high-speed craft that offers a ferry service from Liverpool to Douglas. Running seasonally each year, it typically provides twice-daily sailings from late March to November, with scheduled weekend sailings in winter.

At 315 feet long, it transports up to 850 passengers in just 2 hours 45 minutes across the water, accommodating both motorists and foot passengers. A great option for those looking for a speedier passage, it departs from Liverpool’s brand-new IOM ferry terminal and has a wealth of things to do and places to relax on board. These include seating areas, shops, eateries, two small cinema lounges, and children’s play areas.

For those travelling with pets, the Manannan does not offer dedicated spaces inside. However, guests are welcome to leave their pets in the car, providing plenty of water and ventilation is available. Just be aware that once you head inside the ferry itself, you won’t be able to return to your car (and your pet) again until the crossing is complete.

To reach Liverpool’s terminal, take the train to James Street station or Liverpool Lime Street. Make use of the regular taxis and Ubers that serve the area or hop in the car and drive to the terminal for ease. Once you arrive, you can make use of the departure area’s onsite café, listening for updates and departure information over the loudspeaker.

Please ensure your pet is provided with adequate water, ventilation, and food, as you will be unable to return to your car during passage (unless you also wish to remain in your vehicle).
